Our Inspiration:

The sheer depth of talent and creativity of marginalized handicraft people of Kenya.

Bawa la Tumaini(english meaning-Wing of Hope) is a Fair-Trade company that works with marginalized handicraft producers in Kenya by linking them to global markets. The company works with creative women and men, with the capacity to produce high quality products at competitive market prices. These producers do not want sympathy or charity—but an opportunity to access and compete in global markets.

Bawa la Tumaini seeks to share the enormous creativity of gifted producers living in low income areas and slums. Through its efforts, it seeks to prevent these talents from going to waste by sharing them with customers in global markets. The producers that it works with, especially women often lack the means to produce and sell products to better paying western markets. They are often exploited by middlemen who deny them the basic human right to “quality living” thus confining them to slums. Through Fair Trade, marginalized producers get what they deserve for their beautiful products. They do not require charity—just a fair opportunity to compete on the global stage. Bawa la Tumaini believes that a fairer world is possible and by giving people access to better paying markets, it can change their lives and that of their communities.
